九大2_4.jpgToday is about the interview with the 2 exchange students who have been studying at  Kyushu University since April.
This exchange was made possible by Agreement for Academic Cooperation and Memorandum on Student Exchange between Faculty of Art, Media & Technology, Utrecht School of the Arts, the Netherlands and Faculty of Design, Graduate School of Design, and School of Design, Kyushu University, Japan
I interviewed Mr. Arne Boon (on the left) and Mr. Aduen Darriba (on the right).
Utrecht School of the Arts is a university situated in the central part of the Netherlands, in Hilversum City, which is close to Utrecht City.

----------------------------------------
◆Why did you want to do an exchange?

Mr. Arne Boon:
Kyushu University and Utrecht School of the Arts made an Agreement and I wanted to study abroad.

Mr. Arne Boon:
Noisy! (laughter)

Mr. Aduen Darriba:
I think the context of the story, animation, manga and the characters are different.
We have a lot of games on sports and war in Europe.

◆Are there any differences between Dutch and Japanese Games?

Mr. Arne Boon:
In the Netherlands, games are used more for educational purposes.
For example, e-learning is used for children from a very early age.

Mr. Aduen Darriba:
The difference between the games in Netherlands and Japan is that in the Netherlands, "games" are mainly targeted for children.
For example, game is used for studying English, for education purposes and simulation.
In this sense, I think the total game-playing population in the Netherlands is less that that in Japan.

◆What subjects were you studying at Utrecht School of the Arts?

Mr. Arne Boon:
We had classes in programming, design, psychology.
Some of them were project-based.

Mr. Aduen Darriba:
We had classes in art history, cognitive psychology, interaction design, also.

2_2.jpg◆What are your impressions of Fukuoka?

Mr. Arne Boon:
There are lots of restaurants and shops here.
Also, the people are very kind.
I live in Utrecht, which is a small city, so Fukuoka seems really big.
It's an interesting place, too, as there are bars next to temples and things like that.

Mr. Aduen Darriba:
In Amsterdam, there are many things to do in the central areas, but not so much as you go out into the outskirts.
But in Fukuoka, there are many areas within the city, like Tenjin and Ohashi.
It's like having many little Amsterdams in one city.
I also like the museums here.

◆ What are your impressions of Kyushu Uiversity?

Mr. Arne Boon:
There are good research facilities and labs.
But the classes are in Japanese, which is hard..

Mr. Aduen Darriba:
It's larger than my university.
There are many buildings, people and labs.
There are many people on all levels, from BA students to post-docs who teach us many things, which is a great environment.

◆What are you studying now at Kyushu University?

Mr. Arne Boon:
We're studying sound and sound design, which involves theory and practice of designing and editing sound.
We're also studying interactive interface, programming, projects that involve using the iPhone and GPS.
Of course, we're studying Japanese, too. (laughter)

Mr. Aduen Darriba:
We also have classes on sculpture, using clay, paper and other materials.

◆Tell me about your dreams for the future.

Mr. Arne Boon:
For me, the future is an adventure.
I've spent some time in Turkey, where I leant of different perspectives of different people through having discussions in the dorm.
I want to study more about the fusion of art and technology.
I want to go and study in America next!

Mr. Aduen Darriba:
I don't want to stay in one place. (laughter)
I don't want to settle down in a small environment where I work in one company and go up the career ladder there.
For my own developments, I want to go to different places and experience different things.
But I don't yet know exactly what that is........(laughter)

3_3.jpg----------------------------------------
Thank you very much, Arne and Aduen.
I now know that "games" are widely utilized for educational purposes in the Netherlands.
Now, many serious games are sold in Japan, too!
This made me think that if I could've used games to study, maybe I would've enjoyed studying in my student days......(laughter)
Well, bye for now, till the next Chie Sanpo.
